BORN X RAISED BRINGS ITS SKETCHBOOK TO VANS

The Born X Raised x Vans collaboration is back, and this time the two brands are giving the Authentic 44 a proper Born X Raised treatment.

Rather than polishing up the classic Vans silhouette, the Los Angeles label does almost the opposite. The upcoming SS27 release embraces rough edges, faded surfaces and hand-drawn artwork, making the sneakers feel like they have already spent years being worn, skated in and passed through the city.

It is the kind of imperfection that feels intentional.

And for Born X Raised, that makes perfect sense.

THE AUTHENTIC 44 LOOKS LIKE IT HAS LIVED A LIFE

The footwear comes in white, black and blue colorways, but the colors are only part of the story.

Each pair uses distressed canvas with scuffed edges and deliberately yellowed midsoles, creating the impression of a sneaker that has already accumulated a few memories before it even reaches the shelf.

The treatment gives the Authentic 44 a distinctly lived-in personality rather than the pristine finish usually associated with a brand-new collaboration.

Designed by Born X Raised co-founder Alex “2Tone” Erdmann, the construction feels deliberately imperfect — closer to something found in a well-worn wardrobe than something pulled straight from a factory.

GRAPHICS THAT FEEL STRAIGHT FROM THE STREETS

The real character comes through on the upper.

Pen-style illustrations run across the canvas, mixing brick wall patterns with spiders, webs, teardrops, paint splatters and “OFF THE WALL” lettering.

The artwork gives the shoe the feeling of a notebook that has been turned inside out and transformed into footwear.

It also keeps the collaboration firmly connected to Born X Raised’s visual language, where hand-drawn graphics and street-level storytelling have always played an important role.

Nothing feels overly polished.

That is the point.

FROM MEXICO CITY TO PARIS FASHION WEEK

Before the retail collection, Born X Raised and Vans gave the project a more exclusive introduction.

A 50-pair Friends and Family edition was unveiled during a community event at House of Vans Mexico City, offering an early look at the direction of the collaboration.

The retail version later appeared in preview form during Paris Fashion Week, expanding the conversation beyond the original community release.

That journey is fitting for Born X Raised.

The brand has always managed to keep one foot firmly planted in its own community while building a much larger cultural presence around it.

THE APPAREL KEEPS THE STORY GOING

The sneakers aren’t coming alone.

Born X Raised and Vans are also preparing a matching apparel capsule that carries the same worn-in visual language into clothing.

The lineup includes a washed-black hoodie and sweatpants set, graphic T-shirts in black and blue, and a mesh football jersey finished with Born X Raised’s recognizable Old English branding.

Khaki trousers round out the apparel selection, adding a more understated option to a collection otherwise dominated by graphics and streetwear references.

Together, the pieces make the collaboration feel less like a sneaker drop and more like a complete uniform.

WHY THE COLLABORATION WORKS

Vans and Born X Raised have plenty of common ground.

Both have deep relationships with skate culture, music, art and the communities that form around them. But what makes this project interesting is how little effort it seems to make toward looking polished.

The Authentic 44 becomes a canvas for Born X Raised’s world — one built around hand-drawn imagery, nostalgia, neighborhood identity and clothes that look better once they have been worn.

In an era where collaborations often chase perfection, there is something refreshing about a sneaker designed to look imperfect from day one.

The scuffs are part of the story.

The fading is part of the story.

And that makes the pair feel like it belongs to the culture it is referencing rather than simply borrowing from it.
