World’s First AI Art Museum to Open in 2025

Set to debut at The Grand LA, DATALAND is scheduled for a 2025 launch.

AI art trailblazer Refik Anadol has unveiled plans to open the world’s first museum dedicated to artificial intelligence and the arts, called DATALAND. Expected to open in 2025, this innovative museum will focus on data visualization and algorithmic creativity.

DATALAND will be located at the Gehry-designed Grand LA, joining other major cultural landmarks in downtown Los Angeles, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Broad, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

In a recent statement, Refik Anadol shared, “DATALAND will offer visitors from all walks of life a unique experience using machine learning and state-of-the-art sensory and visualization technologies, showcasing them at a scale and quality never seen before.” DATALAND’s mission includes offering online access and educational platforms, housing a public archive of large-scale nature-focused datasets, and building a comprehensive AI art collection.

The museum’s opening exhibitions will feature the Large Nature Model, an open-source AI model created entirely from environmental data. This groundbreaking initiative was first introduced at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to raise environmental awareness.

Taking immersive experiences to new heights, the galleries will even feature AI-powered scents. Anadol has partnered with a fragrance company to develop a model trained on over 500,000 different scents. “When you step into the room, it’s as if all the flowers in the world are being imagined by AI,” Anadol explained to the Los Angeles Times. “And you can smell these AI dreams.”

Refik Anadol founded his studio in 2014 with artist and cultural researcher Efsun Erkiliç. Since then, the Turkish new media artist has become a leading figure in AI-generated art, creating notable installations at LA’s Intuit Dome, Las Vegas’ Sphere, and the United Nations headquarters. Last year, the Museum of Modern Art added his 2022 generative AI installation Unsupervised to its permanent collection, marking the first of its kind.
