In a move that should make certain Nigerian airlines take note, the U.S. has just introduced a strict rule: airlines must automatically refund passengers if their flights are significantly delayed or canceled, and passengers don’t even have to ask.
This new federal regulation requires refunds to be processed in cash within seven business days if the ticket was bought on a credit card, and within 20 days for other payment methods.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was clear, saying passengers deserve their money back without any bureaucratic hassle or long waits. Now, U.S. airlines face accountability for delays like never before.
And this couldn’t come sooner for travelers in Nigeria, who are all too familiar with sudden delays and cancellations—with no compensation in sight. Many Nigerian airlines routinely make passengers wait, often without the courtesy of updates, let alone refunds. Imagine if Nigerian carriers had to follow a regulation like this. While some in the U.S. might grumble, it’s a dream for anyone who has ever had to navigate Nigeria’s unpredictable airline service, where passengers are left to fend for themselves when plans fall apart.
