Her viral hit “Water” amassed over 10 billion views on TikTok, solidifying her presence in the music industry. Reflecting on her journey, Tyla shared, “I really feel like I’ve changed so much since ‘Water’ and my debut album. I’ve grown into a different version of myself—a little spicier, a little bolder. I’m excited to pour that into my music.” At the 2024 Grammys, she won the best African music performance making her the youngest African to win a Grammy.

The British Vogue feature, photographed by Rafael Pavarotti and styled by George Krakowiak, showcases Tyla in a vibrant Balenciaga ensemble. The cover highlights her dynamic personality and the essence of South African culture. In the accompanying interview, Tyla discusses her evolution as an artist and her excitement for future projects. She also reflects on her rapid rise to fame, stating, “You know when you’ve always felt like you’re destined for something? That you’re going to make it one day? But then when it happens… It’s like something you can’t explain.”

Beyond her musical achievements, Tyla has made significant strides in the fashion industry. Her appearance at the 2024 Met Gala garnered widespread attention, where she donned a custom Balmain ensemble inspired by “Sands Of Time.” The intricate design required assistance as she ascended the museum steps, highlighting her commitment to making bold fashion statements. Tyla’s influence extends to major fashion events, including a standout performance at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, further cementing her status as a multi-talented artist.

Family remains a cornerstone in Tyla’s life. She credits her parents for their unwavering support and protective nature throughout her journey. “My parents have always been very protective. Even before ‘Water,’ I would never go to the studio alone—I was very careful,” she explained. This strong familial bond has been instrumental in keeping her grounded amidst her burgeoning career. Adjusting to life in New York, Tyla often reminisces about her roots, expressing, “Sometimes I just miss having the sun, a yard, and my whole family around. That’s why I love having my sister with me—she’s like a piece of home.”

Tyla’s culinary interests also offer a glimpse into her personal life. In a feature with British Vogue, she prepared a traditional South African dish, showcasing her connection to her heritage. While she admits her cooking approach is “a little less… coordinated,” Tyla’s enthusiasm shines through. She even shares a lighthearted dating tip: “If you’re inviting a guy over and you want to make it seem like you cook, fry onions, garlic, and chillies. The aromas… the guy will imagine you’re cooking a gourmet meal.”

As Tyla continues to navigate her multifaceted career, she remains focused on her artistry and personal growth. Her upcoming projects promise to reflect her evolution, with a blend of musical innovation and cultural pride. Tyla’s journey serves as an inspiration, exemplifying how talent, determination, and authenticity can pave the way for global recognition.
