“THE ALCHEMY OF COLOUR AND MATTER” EXHIBITION TO SHOWCASE TEXTILE AND BEADWORK INNOVATIONS IN ACCRA

Accra is set to host a groundbreaking contemporary art exhibition, The Alchemy of Colour and Matter, at ADA  from March 14 to April 27, 2025. This exhibition will explore the transformative relationship between material and hue, presenting an innovative blend of sculptural tapestries, layered textiles, and intricate beadwork. Rooted in myth and masquerade, the exhibition aims to push the boundaries of textile art, celebrating its evolution as a vessel for storytelling and cultural expression. The showcase will feature works that challenge conventional artistic media, weaving together historical references with forward-thinking design.

Presented by ADA Accra  and The 1897, the exhibition is poised to attract art enthusiasts, collectors, and cultural critics from across the globe. The curatorial approach emphasizes the alchemical process—how raw materials transform into evocative art forms through manipulation, layering, and intricate detailing. The exhibition also delves into themes of identity, heritage, and craftsmanship, with each piece serving as a narrative vessel that captures both personal and collective histories. Through the interplay of color, texture, and structure, the works on display will highlight the dynamic intersection of tradition and innovation within contemporary African art.

The Alchemy of Colour and Matter is curated by Sosa Omorogbe, founder of the 1897. The featured artists include Araba Opoku, Mimi Adu-Serwaah, Na Chainkua Reindorf, Roisin Jones, Sika Amakye, and Tizta Berhanu.

One of the most striking aspects of The Alchemy of Colour and Matter is its focus on sculptural textiles and beadwork, elevating these mediums beyond their functional origins into high art. The pieces presented will not only be visually compelling but also deeply symbolic, drawing from historical and cultural motifs to create immersive, thought-provoking installations. The inclusion of masquerade elements suggests an engagement with performative traditions, where textiles and adornments serve as more than decorative objects—they become active participants in storytelling, transformation, and identity formation.

As Accra continues to solidify its reputation as a global art hub, exhibitions like The Alchemy of Colour and Matter further highlight the city’s vibrant creative landscape. With a growing international appreciation for African art and craftsmanship, this exhibition is expected to foster deeper discussions about materiality, artistic innovation, and cultural continuity. By blending traditional techniques with contemporary narratives, The Alchemy of Colour and Matter promises to be a landmark event, reinforcing the significance of textile-based art in contemporary discourse.
