The Japanese series “Shogun” had a remarkable night at the 2024 Emmy Awards.
Two Japanese actors, Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, made history by becoming the first Japanese winners of the prestigious awards.
Sanada won Best Actor, and Sawai won Best Actress for their roles in “Shogun.”
Their show also won 18 awards, including Best Drama Series.
In appreciation, Sawai said:
“Thank you, John Landgraf (Shogun producer) and the whole FX team, for believing in our story. Thank you, Justin and Rachel, for believing in me and giving me this role of a lifetime.”
“Shogun” is based on a book by James Clavell and is a remake of an older series. It’s set in 17th-century Japan and tells the story of an English sailor who gets stranded in Japan, a powerful Japanese leader facing challenges, and a strong and important woman.
Hiroyuki Sanada plays Lord Yoshii Toranaga, a descendant of Japan’s former rulers.
This win is a big step forward for diversity on TV. Sanada and Sawai are grateful for the recognition.
