Journey Through Life and Soul in Wizard Chan’s “Time Traveler”  EP

Wizard Chan released an 8-track EP on Thursday morning, and true to his brand, it is spiritual music through and through. The project, titled “Time Traveler,” showcases Wizard Chan’s distinctive style and unique Afrobeat subgenre, a fusion of Afrobeats with highlife, deeply rooted in Ijaw cultural sounds. His artful use of Ijaw lingo in some of the songs brings an added layer of cultural richness and authenticity.

The depth of Wizard Chan’s lyrics is profound, and one of his avid listeners described him as “conscious and illuminating.” Truly, this description is accurate, as he addresses universal life issues that so many can relate to, in a soulful manner and with a voice best described as piercing and powerful. Indeed, each song by “The Messenger,” as he describes himself, radiates a spiritual energy that transports listeners to an ethereal, elevated plane.

The artist has a knack for accurately describing some of man’s deepest fears and desires, such as in the title track Time Traveler, where he explores the inner turmoil a person feels as they watch their parents age and leave their youth behind, and the fear that accompanies it, as well as a parent’s desire for their child to have a far better life than they did. In Wana Wana Ma, he solemnly voices a desire we all share, as he prays to God for the work of his hands to be blessed and that he may have a long life to make his father proud and put a smile on his mother’s face.

The journey is a simple prayer to God to bless us with friends who always have us in mind and to grant them a long life. In Highlife, Wizard Chan calls on us to love ourselves and our neighbors instead of harboring hatred. In the song, he makes a wise statement: “Happiness is the key to life, but it cannot take away the pain of life… as I face all my sorrows and pain, I need joy and happiness.”

Each song invites reflection, as one nods or sways appreciatively to the skillfully produced highlife tracks. A special mention goes to producers Town Criers and Pumba Mix, amongst others, whose skillful touches are felt throughout the EP. The project also features appearances from Town Criers and the music group Boma Nime, enriching the sonic experience.

Altogether, “Time Traveler”  is a remarkable release from Wizard Chan, who, with his fresh, genre-defying sounds, has secured his place in the industry. He and his sound are surely here to stay.

On Friday, November 8th, the enchanting Afro-fusion artist Fave released her sophomore music project, the “Dutty Love” EP. Lauded for her silky, sonorous voice and her ability to channel passion, pain, and sheer delight through her beautifully crafted songs, Fave has established herself as a truly exceptional artist. Amidst the wave of female artists gaining recognition in recent years, Fave stands in a class of her own.

The seven-track EP showcases Fave’s musical prowess as she effortlessly shifts from uptempo to introspective moods while remaining true to her signature, emotionally charged sound. The EP opens with “Dutty Love Song,” an energetic yet moving exploration of hurt and regret sparked by betrayal. The next track, “Complicated,” delves into the turmoil of an undefined relationship with an uncommitted lover, while “Controlla” portrays a seemingly toxic dynamic, with each partner vying for control.

In “Juju,” Fave is hopelessly in love, and she shows it, boldly declaring her feelings with lines like, “…I’ll die for you.” “Lose My Mind” continues this theme, as she admits this lover of hers and the emotions he sparks in her, are making her lose her mind.
