NAACP IMAGE AWARDS 2025: CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL MUSIC EXCELLENCE

The 56th edition of the NAACP Image Awards presented by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to honor outstanding performances in film, television, theatre, music, and literature, is set for February 22, 2025. It will be celebrating excellence in music entertainment, with the “Outstanding International Song” category recognizing global musical talent. This year’s nominees include a diverse array of artists and collaborations that showcase the globalization of music. 

Among the nominees is “Jump” by Tyla featuring Gunna & Skillibeng, a high-energy fusion of Afrobeat and trap. Tems earned a nomination with “Love Me Jeje“, a smooth Afro-fusion track that highlights her meteoric rise in the global music scene. 

Nigerian superstar Wizkid amazing collaboration with R&B artist Brent Faiyaz on “Piece of My Heart“, a soulful celebration of love, also earned a nomination. 

Chris Brown’s collaboration with Nigerian sensation Davido on “Hmmm“, earned one as well, certainly for it’s seamless blend of Afrobeat and R&B.

 Rounding out the list of nominations is Skip Marley with “Close“, a heartfelt reggae track that continues his family’s musical legacy with a modern touch.

The “Outstanding International Song” category has a history of celebrating impactful global music. Previous winners include Koffee’sLockdown” in 2021, a reggae anthem that resonated worldwide, and Wizkid and Tems’ “Essence” in 2022, an Afrobeat classic that became a cultural phenomenon. In 2023, Tems’ beautiful and soulful rendition of Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry” bagged the award and then in 2024, another song from Tems, “Me & U” won the award.

This year’s nominees reflect the growing influence of African and Caribbean sounds on the global stage, with each artist bringing unique cultural elements to their music. Fans are eagerly debating their favorites and are encouraged to cast their votes, adding to the excitement of this highly anticipated award. The NAACP Image Awards continues to highlight the richness of international music, uniting audiences across the globe through the power of song.
