MICHAEL RIDER TO MAKE HIS CELINE DEBUT IN JULY

In a significant shift within the fashion industry, Michael Rider is set to make his debut as Celine‘s new creative director in July 2025 at Paris, according to an exclusive from WWD. This appointment follows the departure of Hedi Slimane, who led the brand for seven years, bringing about transformative changes.

Michael Rider, a 42-year-old American designer, boasts an impressive resume. He began his career at Balenciaga under Nicolas Ghesquière from 2004 to 2008, then served as design director at Celine during Phoebe Philo’s tenure from 2008 to 2018. Most recently, he was the creative director at Polo Ralph Lauren from 2018 until May 2024.

Rider’s return to Celine is anticipated to usher in a design philosophy reminiscent of the Philo era, characterized by understated sophistication. This contrasts with Slimane’s tenure, which was marked by a vintage aesthetic and the introduction of new product lines, including luxury perfumes and menswear.

Under Slimane’s leadership, Celine underwent significant transformations, including a logo redesign and a shift towards a vintage-inspired aesthetic. He also expanded the brand’s offerings to include luxury perfumes and menswear.

Rider’s appointment has been met with optimism within the fashion community. Séverine Merle, CEO of Celine, stated, “Michael’s vision, creative talent, together with his genuine nature and strong connection to Celine’s heritage make him a natural choice to continue to build a long-lasting success for the maison.”

As the fashion world anticipates Rider’s debut collection, there is considerable interest in how he will balance honoring Celine’s rich heritage with his own creative vision. His extensive experience and deep understanding of the brand’s legacy position him well to lead Celine into its next chapter.
