Ademola Lookman and William Troost-Ekong have been recognized for their outstanding performances, earning nominations for the FIFA Best Awards.
Lookman, who had a stellar season with Atalanta and impressed during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is also a strong contender for the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year title. Initially part of a ten-man shortlist, he advanced to the final five. Ekong, who won the AFCON 2023 MVP award, did not make the final cut.
FIFA announced the nominations on social media, unveiling the top players competing in various categories. Lookman is up for a spot in the Men’s 11, facing tough competition from stars like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Jr, and Erling Haaland. Ekong is vying for a place against defenders like Dani Carvajal, Achraf Hakimi, and Antonio Rüdiger.
FIFA explained that the voting process involves fans, national team captains, coaches, and media experts. For the first time, fans can contribute to selecting the Men’s and Women’s 11.
Meanwhile, recent reports show Nigeria’s national team has dropped in the latest FIFA rankings due to poor performances in 2025 qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda. The Super Eagles now rank 44th globally and fifth in Africa, their sharpest decline in years.
