As Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James gears up for his 22nd season in the NBA, speculation about his retirement continues to grow. Having already shattered records, including surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the league’s all-time leading scorer in February 2023, James has little left to prove. With his 40th birthday approaching during the 2023-24 season, many wonder if this will be his final year on the court.

One of James’ long-stated goals has been to play alongside his son, Bronny James, in the NBA. That dream is set to become reality this season, as Bronny was selected by the Lakers in the 2024 NBA Draft, marking the first time in history a father-son duo will play in the league together.
Despite achieving this milestone, LeBron is not expected to retire after the upcoming season. During a September 13 appearance on NBA Today, ESPN’s Lakers reporter Dave McMenamin offered clarity on James’ future.
“LeBron signed an extension this summer with only one year guaranteed,” McMenamin explained. “But I don’t think that signals the countdown to his retirement, especially if the Lakers face challenges this season.”
He went on to suggest that when James finally decides to retire, it won’t be a quiet exit. “It will be a grand farewell tour across all NBA cities, not a sudden announcement at the end of the season.”
For now, it seems LeBron James is in no rush to step away from the game, and fans can expect an eventual, highly celebrated departure when the time comes.
