In a significant shift within the fashion industry, Donatella Versace has announced her decision to step down as the creative director of Versace, a role she has held since 1997 following the tragic death of her brother. Her nearly three-decade tenure has been marked by her dedication to preserving and evolving the brand’s bold and glamorous identity. Donatella expressed her gratitude towards her team and the employees of Versace, stating, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy.”
Effective April 1, 2025, Donatella will transition to the role of Chief Brand Ambassador, focusing on philanthropic endeavors and continuing to champion the Versace brand globally. In her new capacity, she aims to support Versace’s philanthropic and charitable initiatives while remaining an advocate for the brand worldwide.
The creative helm will be taken over by Dario Vitale, formerly the Design and Image Director at Miu Miu. Vitale expressed his honor in joining Versace, stating, “I am truly honored to join Versace as the Chief Creative Officer and to be a part of this special and powerful fashion luxury House created by Gianni and Donatella.” His appointment has sparked speculation about potential strategic shifts within Capri Holdings, Versace’s parent company, including rumors of a possible acquisition by the Prada Group.
This transition marks a pivotal moment for Versace, as the brand navigates challenges such as operating losses and declining revenues, with projections indicating further declines before anticipated growth resumption in 2027. The fashion world now watches closely to see how Vitale’s vision will influence Versace’s future, while Donatella’s enduring legacy continues to shape the brand’s identity.
