The much-anticipated Davido single, Funds, is finally here! Featuring Odumodu Blvck and Chike, the track was first teased during Davido’s birthday show on November 21, stirring excitement among the audience. Released this morning, the song delivers on its promise and has quickly become a fan favorite.
Adding to the buzz, Davido has officially announced the title of his upcoming fifth studio album–5ive, set to be released in 2025. Fans are overjoyed with this double treat and the elation is heavy in the air with many flooding social media with enthusiastic comments like, “Davido really knows this music thing. Funds looking like the biggest song of the year already!,””Davido too sabi this music thing ” and “Funds ” is that jam!! Davido’s Album [5ive] about to be one of the greatest afrobeats albums already!!
However, not everyone is on board. Critics have labeled the track “mid” and “unimpressive,” sparking debate about its quality.
The song begins with a nostalgic nod to Brenda Fassie’s classic hit Vuli Ndlela, weaving in a sample that sets the tone beautifully. Davido’s opening verse and pre-chorus are simple yet electrifying, with one standout lyric: “Make I show you my bank account. I get plenty (funds) to go around.” Odumodu Blvck’s verse takes a playful turn, peppered with references to various delicacies–Brokoto, Tilapia, Ogunfe (goat meat)–meant to be savored with the lover he croons about. Meanwhile, Chike elevates the song with his velvety vocals, singing predominantly in Igbo, which adds depth and a rich cultural layer to the track.
In an unexpected twist, the chorus, “I go mismanage my funds for you,” is delivered as a harmonious call-and-response by all three artists. This seamless blending showcases their undeniable chemistry and elevates the song’s emotional appeal.
Ace producer, Ucee certainly does a stellar job on the beat production and his skill shines through clearly on the track.
With Funds now on repeat, anticipation for 5ive continues to grow. If this single is anything to go by, Davido’s forthcoming album promises to be nothing short of extraordinary, a masterpiece in the making.
