The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) has launched a new award category named the ‘Trailblazer Award’ in memory of Herbert Wigwe, the former CEO of Access Holdings PLC who passed away on February 9, 2024.
This new award was announced on Sunday during the festival’s opening night in Victoria Island, Lagos. Chioma Ude, the founder of AFRIFF, explained that the award aims to celebrate Nigerians excelling in creative fields, while also honoring Wigwe’s legacy in the arts.
“This award will recognize Nigerians excelling in creative fields, commemorating Herbert’s legacy in the arts,” Ude stated.
Benedict Oramah, president of Afreximbank, and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos state, were the first to receive this award.
During the event, Sanwo-Olu praised Ude, saying, “I think I need to acknowledge Chioma especially. Chioma, you have been such a great inspiration to a lot of people.” He commended her “tenacity, can-do spirit, resilience, and sheer commitment.”
Other notable guests included comedian Bovi, former information and culture minister Lai Mohammed, and Hannatu Musawa, the minister of art, culture, and creative economy.
On Monday, Nigerian-British actor John Boyega was also awarded the Trailblazer Award for his contributions to the film industry.
