Hollywood’s brightest stars lit up the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 5, 2025, for the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, a celebration of artistry, diversity, and history-making achievements. In a historic sweep, “Emilia Pérez”, a daring Spanish musical about a Mexican cartel leader who enlists a lawyer to help her disappear and achieve her dream of transitioning into a woman, stole the spotlight with four wins, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Foreign Language Film. The film’s groundbreaking narrative and record-breaking ten nominations solidified its place in Golden Globe history and one of its lead actresses, Zoe Saldana, bagged the award for best female actor in a supporting role.
As another highlight of the event, standout actress Demi Moore captured hearts with her win of the award for Best Female Actor In a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) for her role in “The Substance.” This is a career milestone for the 62 year old actress and it left the room buzzing with emotion.
Meanwhile, “The Brutalist,” a poignant historical drama chronicling the journey of a Hungarian Holocaust survivor turned architect, clinched Best Motion Picture in the drama category. Adrien Brody’s powerful performance in the film earned him the award for Best Male Actor In a Motion Picture, of course in the same category (Drama). For the same show, exceptional director, Brady Corbet won the award for Best Director (Motion Picture).
On the television series front, FX’s sweeping international epic “Shōgun” reigned supreme, earning Best Television Series – Drama and acting accolades for Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai and Tadanobu Asano. The outstanding show had previously earned several accolades from various fronts since it’s initial release in February, 2024, winning 18 categories at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards and 76th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, thus setting a new record as the most awarded single season of television in Emmy history. The show received global critical acclaim, for it’s directing, writing, visuals, production, cast performances and the show’s faithfulness to the source material. It’s no surprise then, that it went on to receive four Golden Globe Awards.
Comedy fans celebrated “Hacks,” which claimed Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, with veteran actress Jean Smart continuing her golden streak as Best Television Female Actor (Musical/Comedy Series)–an accolade she has received three good times on account of her performance in each of the show’s three seasons. The amazing series has stood out for its outstanding writing and directing and has won awards in that regard as well (writing and directing),
Another show that stood out was the animated adventure film, “Flow,” directed by the highly talented Latvian filmmaker, Gints Zilbalodis. The movie won the category for Best Motion Picture (Animated).
Several artists stood out with wins in their various categories. Fernanda Torres won the award for Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama) while Sebastian Stan won the award for Best Male Actor In a Motion Picture (Musical or Picture) in “A Different Man.” Kieran Culkin won the award for Best Male Actor In a Supporting Role for his performance in the movie, “A Real Pain” and Jeremy Allen White won the award for Best Male Actor In a TV Series (Musical or Comedy), for his role in the comedy-drama series, “The Bear.” This is besides several other artists who stood out as well, earning nominations for their tremendous roles in various movies and TV series.
Asides the show’s main focus–the awards that were dished out, the night was filled with jaw-dropping fashion moments as stars embraced bold trends, including a resurgence of opera gloves, flaunted by musical icon and amazing actress, Ariana Grande as well as actress and movie producer, Kerry Washington.
The beautiful Zendaya was stunning in her resplendent dress and Nigerian-American actress, Ayo Edebiri was impressively attired in a perfect replica of an outfit worn by actress, Julia Roberts’ at the golden globes during the 1990’s.
An important part of the year’s award show that just must be mentioned is the untelevised Golden Globes’ inaugural Golden Gala. This event was held at the Beverly Hilton on Friday, January 3, 2025, ahead of the main Golden Globes awards ceremony on Sunday, January 5th. During this gala, Viola Davis was presented with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and Ted Danson accepted the Carol Burnett Award, a truly special way of recognizing their unparalleled contributions to the industry.
