SEUN KUTI HONORS FELA’S LEGACY AT THE EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL

Seun Kuti, son of the legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, delivered a powerful performance at the EFG London Jazz Festival. Leading Egypt 80, his late father’s iconic band, Seun blended music and social commentary, keeping the Afrobeat spirit alive while making it his own.

The show opened with Fela’s classic track, Shuffering and Shmiling, which criticizes the role of religious institutions in societal problems. Seun referenced the recent resignation of an archbishop in England, tying the song’s message to current events. While his comments weren’t as fiery as Fela’s original lyrics, the message of questioning power and corruption came through strongly.

Among the audience was Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, a Nigerian pastor based in the UK, who was seated in the VIP section. Seun warmly acknowledged Pastor Tobi during the performance, calling him a friend. After the concert, a video showed the pastor praising Seun’s wife, Yetunde, for her incredible musical talent.

They celebrated the successful night together with the band and crew. In a symbolic gesture, Seun poured part of his drink on the ground as a tribute to the gods.

Seun’s energy on stage was unmatched. He led the band with ease, using his entire body to guide the music, creating an electric atmosphere that had the audience dancing and fully engaged.

The band’s rhythm section stood out, with Kunle Justice’s deep, rolling basslines and Mario Orsinet’s steady and creative drumming driving the performance. The horns blared catchy melodies, while the two backing vocalists added vibrant energy. Together, they built layers of sound that kept the audience hooked from start to finish.

Seun’s ability to mix long, improvised solos with high-energy jams showcased the skill and experience of the entire band. Every moment felt alive, with the musicians and audience feeding off each other’s energy.

More than just a concert, the night was a celebration of Afrobeat’s lasting impact. Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 aren’t just carrying on Fela’s legacy, they’re showing that Afrobeat remains as powerful and relevant as ever.
