Kendrick Lamar has just released a new single on Instagram titled “Watch the Party Die.” This five-minute track marks his first release since “Not Like Us” and arrives shortly after his announcement as a headliner for the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
The decision to feature Kendrick has stirred debate among rap fans, with some arguing that Lil Wayne, who is from New Orleans—the host city for this year’s Super Bowl—would have been a more fitting choice. Prominent figures like Nicki Minaj have voiced support for Lil Wayne, highlighting his significant influence. Conversely, others have defended Kendrick, pointing to his successful year and prestigious accolades as a Pulitzer Prize-winning artist as reasons he’s a deserving choice for the show.
The Super Bowl Halftime Show announcement has sparked a divide among fans and fueled online discussions. Kendrick’s Instagram post, which includes a photo of a pair of worn black Air Force 1 sneakers, has led some to speculate that his ongoing feud with Drake may not be over.
In his new track, Kendrick raps, “Just walked that man down, that’ll do everyone a solid / It’s love but tough love, sometimes you gotta result in violence.” The cover art featuring the battered sneakers is thought to be a nod to Drake’s track “Push Ups,” which poked fun at Kendrick’s shoe size. Additionally, Kendrick’s lyrics include references to Terrace Martin, Christian rapper Lecrae, and DJ Akademiks, with lines like, “The radio personality pushing propaganda for a salary / Let me know when they turn up as a casualty.”
